Oakland: Gunman attempts to rob nanny pushing 15

OAKLAND – A 15-month-old child being pushed in a stroller by her nanny was injured in an attempted armed robbery in the Trestle Glen neighborhood on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The girl was injured by bullet shrapnel after a gunman attempting to rob the 63-year-old nanny of her purse fired a shot into the ground, police said. The girl was later taken to a hospital.

The violence happened about 10:52 a.m. on the 800 block of Trestle Glen Road, in an affluent neighborhood above Lakeshore Avenue.

In an interview after the attempted robbery, the 63-year-old woman said she was walking with the toddler on a sidewalk when a man who got out of a vehicle "put something to my head and said, ‘don't move.’"

"I started screaming. He started grabbing my bag. He's pulling. I’m pulling," said the victim, who this newspaper is not naming. He then fired a shot into the ground and left without the purse, she said.

The suspects drove off in a dark-colored vehicle toward Lakeshore Avenue.

Residents in the area helped comfort the woman and girl, who were given refuge in another person's home on Trestle Glen until police and paramedics arrived. The girl was in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

"I was just so scared," the nanny said, before praising the "nice people who just came outside and helped me."

A detailed description of the suspects or the vehicle they were in have not been released.

Police are sending extra patrols to the neighborhood due to a recent uptick in robberies. The most recent happened Saturday when a woman was injured and had her purse stolen by several suspects in the 700 block of Grosvenor Place, a few blocks from Tuesday's robbery. People have also been robbed using ATMs in the area of Trestle Glen and Lakeshore.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrests of the suspects in Tuesday's violence. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
