Herschel Walker says $700 check to ex

Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker admitted Sunday that he gave his ex-girlfriend a check for $700 that she claims was used to pay for an abortion — but denied knowing anything about the procedure.

Walker, who maintains that he is "a Christian" and "pro-life," has been roiled by charges by his ex that he both urged her to have and paid for the procedure in 2009.

"It's a lie," the former University of Georgia football star told NBC News in an interview that aired on Monday. "You want me to answer something that's a lie, and everyone's trying to trick me and make me respond."

When confronted with copies of the alleged check and receipt from the abortion clinic, Walker donned thick, black-rimmed glasses as he pored over the materials.

"Prove that I did that. Just to show me things like that does nothing for me," he finally said, before later admitting: "Yes, that's my check."

"This is still a lie because she's the mother of my child," Walker said of the woman, who also gave birth to one of his children in 2011.

"I have no idea what that can be for," Walker added of the $700 check.

The ex, who made the initial claim to the Daily Beast earlier this month, has cited the check copy, as well as the clinic receipt for $575 and a get-well card signed by the Heisman Trophy winner as proof of her claims.

With Election Day a little more than three weeks away, Walker trails his Democratic opponent, Sen. Rafael Warnock, by 3.3 percentage points, according to a Real Clear Politics average of polls.

Early voting kicked off Monday in Georgia, including in the race between Walker and Warnock, which Republicans see as key to flipping the Senate back to their control.
